Dear Diary,

I got in a big fight with my deliriously beautiful girlfriend and decided to go for a drive, which is what I was doing at the rest stop at the Tejon Pass on Friday night – in case you were wondering. If you’ve been paying attention you will know that I love driving but did you know that I love sleeping in highway rest stops? It’s the best! I like the way the windows fog up and the car becomes a private room and I like the faint swoosh of traffic on the interstate through the night, and I like the historical markers and maps, and I like the slow rumble of semi-trailers pulling in and out, I find their presence to be very comforting. I like the brightly lit vending machines and the sound of the whipped hot chocolate. I like the way people stumble out from their cars as if sleepwalking to stretch their legs and piss and walk their dogs, and I would imagine that most of them have an interesting story to tell. There is an unspoken sense of community amongst the wayfaring strangers who have come together to take refuge for the night. The only thing I didn’t like was the absence of my girlfriend: I was missing her like crazy!
